Two solid resources in seeking to understand the tactics of guerrilla war during the Chinese Civil War. The first is an academic article examining Mao's contribution, the second is a primary source activity that asks the student to evaluate the writings of Mao on guerrilla warfare.
Activity #1
Read the article: "Mao-guerrilla-warfare" and answer the following questions" 1. As described in these passages, what are the characteristics of guerrilla warfare and in what situations can it be effectively used? 2. Why would Mao not consider guerrilla warfare to be an independent form of warfare, but, instead, a “step in the total war?” 3. Aside from China, where and how successfully has guerrilla warfare been used?
